Fairy Forest School Upcoming events

With the launch of our 3 forest schools we've developed a programme for the next half term to cover the Warrington area and stretch in Manchester.

We're determined to encourage more youngsters to have fun outside so we offer sessions from as little as £5 per child. And as an extra enticer we've got a special offer for our first session for bringing a second child - see our previous posts.

Have a look at our site descriptions to see which site suits you. All sites are very different and if you're prepared to travel then your children would have a different experience at each site.

Appleton Forest School is based in Lumb Brook Valley and runs on Mondays. An old woodland with lots of mature trees and a stream running right through it.  Wellies are a must as we often play in the stream. The Dingle as its known has lots of character and lots of established flora and fauna - so we have to tread carefully and respectfully or the fairies might cast a spell on us.

Salford Forest School runs every Tuesday is based in a Millennium Wood near Cadishead planted on the flat mosses. It represents a blank canvas with lots of scope for future conservation work and development of activities as the site matures further.

Birchwood Forest School is every Wednesday at Gorse Covert Mounds. This landscaped area is kind of between the two others but it does boast a great view over the Manchester mosses from Pestfurlong Hill, ponds and mossland. It has lots of open space and wildlife.

Sessions run at 9:45am and 11:15am but we'll add more as demand goes up.

Week Commencing 9th February - WINTER FUN in the WOODS. Great to spend some time with toddlers and pre-schoolers before their older siblings break up next week.

Week Commencing 16th February - HALF TERM. Sessions aimed at mixed groups including older children. Get them playing outdoors before they go back to school next week.

Week commencing 23rd February to Easter - SPRING FOREST SCHOOL. We'll be running sessions for toddlers and preschoolers as part of a full on forest school programme with special events such as Gruffalo walks, fairy hunts and much more. Child led and looking at your child's development we'll tailor sessions. Pay for one session at a time or book four in advance and get the fifth free - and don't panic if you miss one you've booked - let us know and we'll just give you another session later.

EASTER - More details to follow but trust us we've got something very eggsciting.

SESSIONS HAVE LIMITED SPACES SO BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL.

We now have 3 forest school sites covering Warrington and Manchester

With the kind and gracious permission of the Woodland Trust we have created 3 forest schools in the Warrington and Manchester areas.

Our Director and Outdoor Education Guru Rawdon was ecstatic when he heard the news from the Woodland Trust's representative.

"We demonstrated that we could use Lumb Brook Valley responsibly, ethically and sustainably when we carried out our Elf Advent Walks just before Christmas. The trust has been fantastic in their support and we are in no doubt of our responsibility to look after the woods, the fabulous plants and animals that live there and the people visiting them."

"By developing a network of forest school sites we can support outdoor learning and forest school programmes for local schools, preschools and families whilst ensuring the woods are not subject to overuse. "

To help our customers keep tabs on what's going on we've created 3 facebook pages for each forest school. Like and share them so you can find out what's happening.

We've also updated our website with direct links for Parents, PreSchools, Schools and those wanting educational advice. Visit our website www.fairyforestschool.com , email rawdon@fairyforestschool.com or call 07799 321 849 for more information.

The Ultimate Fire Guide

I heartily recommend The Wood Fire Handbook - The complete guide to the perfect fire by Vincent Thurkettle.

Master of Fire

Master of Fire

Its great if you're thinking of getting a wood burner or real fire or already own one giving you pointers on what kind of commitment you'll need to make such as wood storage, seasoning, storage, splitting and more.

Where it excels is the author's love of burning wood. He describes burnt different types of wood as if describing the bouquet of fine wines.

The chapter on campfires and wood fire cooking is good for forest schools but my favourite is a good laymen description of the science of fire. He compares heat output from flames to embers. Very interesting if you own an ultra efficient stove like mine (pictured) that uses secondary overfire air to get complete combustion of smoke.

The author has worked in forests all his life and is a repository of down to earth practical information and anecdotes.

The nicest touch is the end quote.

I sit beside the fire and think of people long ago, and people who will see a world that I will never know.

Codes of Conduct and Principles for Good Practice

There are ethical codes of conduct to carrying out Forest School Activities within the UK. These have been drawn up and are regulated by the Forest School Association (FSA).  You can view these codes of conduct at http://www.forestschoolassociation.org/members-code-of-conduct/ and principles for good practice at http://www.forestschoolassociation.org/full-principles-and-criteria-for-good-practice/ .

Currently the FSA is establishing a verification process and searchable map however currently the only accurate way to determine if someone is a member is to contact them and ask.

Complaints made to the FSA are investigated and may result in them being disqualified as members.

ADVICE

Only employ Forest School Practitioners that are members of the Forest School Association as they are required to work to the principles and codes of conduct of the association. They will often display their membership logo as shown.

FSA logo for use by members. If in doubt contact the FSA.

If you have doubts about the validity of the provider’s membership then contact the FSA.

Telephone: 01228 564407

Email: enquiries@forestschoolassociation.org

If you are unhappy with the service you receive from your forest school provider then contact the FSA. They will investigate and may revoke the provider’s membership.

If you are concerned about Health and Safety Issues resulting from poor practice then consider reporting them to your local authority to prevent similar circumstances occurring in other schools/nurseries.

Risk Assessment

Risk assessment quality varies within various sectors and Forest Schools are no exception. One local provider that claims to be a forest school was noted to be simply doctoring dates and names on their course risk assessment handouts before photocopying them and handing them in.

Risk Assessment is covered on Forest School Practitioner Level 3 Training in some detail and should include appropriate control measures that are followed.

Best practice should include an assessment of:

·         The site – its inherent hazards such as water, slopes, dead wood at height, etc. and how risk from these hazards will be controlled

·         The session – what activities/operations will be carried out and how will these be managed safely such as lighting a fire, using tools, etc.

·         The Point of Work – an assessment of newly arising hazards at the time of work such as unexpected weather conditions, recent break ins, partially fallen trees, etc.

·         Dynamic decision making – a flowchart showing the decision making process of how safety is maintained.

Often these are included in one document that is reviewed/rewritten every year or until after a significant event – whichever is sooner. However, the session risk assessment should vary with each session as part of session planning.

The Point of Work Risk Assessment is hand written at the place of work and may be as little as a statement that there are no new hazards other than those in the site/session assessment.

Note that a risk assessment is little more than a documented opinion on risk with a plan on how to control dangers. By discussing and approving the risk assessment with the provider you agree a consensus on safe working practice. This is far better than allowing a provider to work to their own risk assessment without your input.

 RISK ASSESSMENT ADVICE

Insist on a copy of risk assessments prior to work.

Ensure they are in date and relevant to your site and the agreed scope of work.

Discuss the risk assessment with your provider to satisfy they will be working safely.

Ensure the risk assessments are reviewed at the time of work by your forest school provider by getting them to sign onto the documentation on the day.

Get them to reassess and record new hazards stating how they will be dealt with.

Ask for the signed copy to be handed in or made available whilst on site.

Encourage your own staff to scrutinise the risk assessment and working practices so a consensus of safe working practice and a culture of openness is achieved.
